Ex-Police Officer Pleads Guilty to Sex Offences
A former Nottinghamshire Police Inspector, Russell Dew, 44, pleaded guilty to five counts of sexual activity with a 13-year-old child during his hearing at Nottingham Crown Court Monday. Dew confessed to the offences, which happened in Newark between February and August 2010.
According to the BBC, in one instance Dew handcuffed the victim to the floor. The initial allegations were made by the victim to her teacher; the information was then passed on to the police. Dew resigned from his post as an inspector at Mansfield on Aug. 18.
"The nature of these offences goes against everything the role of a police officer stands for. Safeguarding children is a priority for the force, and yet Dew took opportunities outside work to target his victim and take advantage of her," DCI Diane Heydon said in a statement.
"We have been supporting the victim and her family through this difficult situation, and I am pleased that plea spares the need for a prolonged trial," Heydon added.
Dew will be sentenced Dec. 19.
