UFC Fighter-Turned-Police Officer Easily Takes Down Cocky Motorist During Intense Arrest

A routine traffic stop in South Florida took an unexpected turn when a motorist decided to confront the wrong police officer.

Bodycam footage from a March 27 incident in Coral Springs, Florida, recently surfaced online, showing former UFC bantamweight title challenger Marlon 'Magic' Moraes dealing with an increasingly confrontational driver. The footage was published on social media on 5 September and quickly attracted attention because of Moraes' unusual background.

The confrontation escalated after the motorist repeatedly challenged officers at the scene. At one point, he turned his attention towards Moraes and said: 'What are you gonna do? You can't do s***'

Moraes appeared unfazed by the challenge. He simply nodded before responding: 'I can't!'

The exchange could have ended there, but the motorist continued moving towards the former fighter.

Moraes Puts Years of MMA Training To Use

As the man stepped closer, Moraes warned him against advancing.

'Do not step against me,' Moraes told him. 'You want to go? You're going to go.'

The motorist ignored the warning and moved towards the officer again. Moraes then reacted with a swift hip toss, taking the man to the ground before fellow officers moved in to restrain and handcuff him.

The takedown was hardly surprising given Moraes' background. Before putting on a police uniform, the Brazilian spent more than a decade competing professionally in mixed martial arts.

Moraes began training in Brazil as a nine-year-old after a friend introduced him to the sport. He eventually developed into one of the leading bantamweights in the world, capturing the World Series of Fighting title and successfully defending it five times.

He joined the UFC in 2017 and scored notable victories over Aljamain Sterling, John Dodson and José Aldo. His biggest UFC opportunity came at UFC 238 in June 2019, when he faced Henry Cejudo for the vacant bantamweight championship. Moraes started strongly but was stopped by Cejudo in the third round.

From Fighting in the Cage To Serving on the Streets

Moraes eventually stepped away from professional MMA after suffering a knockout loss to Gabriel Braga at PFL 4 in June 2023. The defeat marked his seventh consecutive loss by knockout or technical knockout and prompted him to retire.

His retirement soon led to a surprising second act. In June 2024, Moraes was sworn in as an officer with the Davie Police Department after completing his law enforcement certification.

The transition marked a significant new chapter in his life, allowing him to continue serving his community in a very different role. Moraes later joined the Coral Springs Police Department, where he patrols South Florida and takes on regular night shifts. He has previously explained his motivation for entering law enforcement in straightforward terms.

'Every time I go to work, I want to help someone,' he said. 'When the call comes, I want to be the one.'

Ironically, the March traffic stop provided a vivid demonstration of how his old career can still come in handy. The former title challenger remains capable of putting his fighting instincts to work when a situation threatens to boil over, although this time, the Octagon had been replaced by a South Florida roadside.
