Guardians of the Galaxy gets the Telltale episodic adventure game treatment for 2017 launch
Marvel's Jay Ong says the series "fully showcases Marvel and Telltale's rich legacy of storytelling."
Telltale Games announced a Guardians of the Galaxy game is in the works during the The Games Awards 2016 in Los Angeles on 1 December. Revealed with a brief teaser, the five-part episodic series titled "Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series" will be released in 2017 for consoles, PC and mobile devices.
The brief teaser did not show much in terms of what the game will look like or the cosmic adventurers it will feature based on Marvel's iconic franchise. It shows only shows Star Lord's cassette player floating through space before revealing the game's official name with "Dancing in the Moonlight" by King Harvest playing in the background.
The series will be available digitally, as well as in stores as a season pass disc that will provide the first episode with subsequent episodes for download as they are released.
Telltale chief executive Kevin Bruner said: "The energizing blend of humour, emotion, teamwork, and full-on sci-fi action adventure of the Guardians provides an enormously satisfying space to explore through Telltale's unique style of interactive storytelling. In [the game] players will take on multiple roles within the ragtag band of heroes, and take the pilot's seat in directing their escapades around the universe."
Jay Ong, senior vice president of games and innovation at Marvel Entertainment, said: "[The game] fully showcases Marvel and Telltale's rich legacy of storytelling, and fans will find themselves immersed in an original, character-driven narrative. As part of our strategy to establish a new standard for Marvel games, this is certainly among the great titles to come."
The announcement confirms reports and rumours in November that such a game was in the pipe. A document containing video game titles released by actors union SAG-AFTRA during its voice actors' strike reportedly listed the game under the code name "Blue Harvest."
In April 2015, Marvel announced a partnership with Telltale Games to develop games based on its beloved properties. The entertainment company revealed at the time that the first game would be released in 2017, but did provide additional details about any other Telltale-Marvel projects.
