Overview
The final of the 2016 edition of Caribbean Premier League is finally upon us and will feature two teams who topped the league table during the group stages, meaning the best teams will compete for the crown this year.
Guyana Amazon Warriors come into the final on the back of a four-wicket win over the same opponents in the first playoff on 3 August. Pakistani international Sohail Tanvir was the star of the show for the Guyana outfit. In a match-winning performance he picked up 2 for 24 and smashed 21 runs off 13 balls to take the player of the match award.
Tanvir has had a spectacular tournament so far, taking 20 wickets in 11 games at an economy rate of 6.66, finding himself second on the highest wicket-taker list. On the batting front, Chris Lynn has performed exceptionally to lead the run-making charts with 447 runs at a strike rate of 133.82.
The rest of the team have rallied around these two players, playing their roles to perfection and will need to do the same if they are to win their maiden CPL title come Sunday.
Their opponents the Jamaican Tallawahs should thank all-rounder Andre Russell who blazed a personal best maiden Twenty20 International hundred against Trinbago Knight Riders to take his team to victory. Coming to the crease when the team were in a precarious position of 67/4, Russell then proceeded to tear the attack apart, scoring 100 in just 44 balls, a knock which included 11 hits over the fence.
Russell was not finished though, coming back to take 2 wickets in the second innings to deservingly take home the player of the match award. Bangladeshi spinner Shakib Al Hasan too got into the act, picking up 3/23 to get some form going into the final.
Skipper Chris Gayle who has had a stop-start tournament so far, looked dangerous, scoring 35 off 26 only to get out to a lose shot. Jamaica will need all of their top guns firing at all cylinders if they are to beat Guyana in the final and take home their second CPL trophy.
