Happy 20th birthday Zendaya! 12 things you didn't know about the Spider-Man: Homecoming actress
You may only know her as the 'new Mary Jane Watson', so we've looked back on Zendaya's career so far.
Singer and actress Zendaya turns 20-years-old today (1 September) and while she's been making headlines recently, thanks to the revelation that she'll likely be playing Peter Parker's long-standing love interest Mary Jane Watson in Spider-Man: Homecoming, some may not be too familiar with her origins in show-business.
So with that in mind, in order to truly celebrate her hitting the milestone birthday, IBTimes UK has taken a look back at her work so far and offered up some facts about her that might have eluded you so far...
- Born in Oakland, California, Zendaya has African-American, German and Scottish ancestry.
- Her name – which is a self-confessed creative spin on the Shona name Tendai – means "to give thanks." However, she revealed that she was originally named Chendaya, but her father was such a fan of the letter 'Z' that he started calling her that instead.
- She began dancing at just eight-years-old and went on to be a member of hip hop dance troop, Future Shock Oakland.
- She was once a backup dancer for Selena Gomez in a Sears advertisement.
- When she was younger, she always figured she would grow up to be a basketball player but along the way, unexpectedly, became an actress.
- Her first acting role was one of the witches in a production of Macbeth. She was a part of the California Shakespearean Theatre, where her mother worked as a house manager.
- Before she found her career in performing, Zendaya worked predominantly as a model for Macy's, Mervyns and Old Navy.
- Shortly after she rose to fame on Disney Channel series Shake It Up and performing on the soundtrack, Zendaya went on to become a fully-fledged singer in her own right. On 17 September 2013, she released her self-titled debut album which reached No. 51 in the US chart. This year, she unveiled her latest single, Something New, which also features vocals from Chris Brown.
- Similarly in 2013, Zendaya released her debut book, entitled Between U and Me: How to Rock Your Tween Years with Style and Confidence.
- Her first movie role was in Disney Channel Original Movie Frenemies, alongside Bella Thorne.
- Her favourite food is burritos, however, her favourite dessert is coffee ice cream.
- In 2015, she appeared alongside the likes of Gigi Hadid, Cindy Crawford, Lena Dunham, Kendrick Lamar, Cara Delevingne and Ellie Goulding in Taylor Swift's music video, Bad Blood.
