iMods: Cydia alternative jailbreak store for iPhone and iPad demoed on video
iMods beta seems to be the first ever major attempt at creating a Cydia alternative jailbreak store for iPhone and iPad since the birth of iOS jailbreak, as the industrious folks with iMod team have released the first preview video showcasing their brand new jailbreak store in action.
Though several such attempts in the past have not come to fruition, iMods could be the first Cydia alternative installer given its impressive UI that mimics the look and feel of iOS 8 along with an iconic Featured page built along the lines of Apple's App Store.
Folks at iPhone hacks have got their hands on iMods beta to dig out some fascinating information including visual tweaks and new structured tabs to show the status of the recently installed packages, the most-rated and the highest downloaded list of popular packages.
For instance, the main categories on the iMods home page include Featured, Top Charts and Updates wherein Top Charts indicate the popular packages available based on the most rated or highest downloaded package.
The sub-sections include Top Free, Top Paid and New Items which help users to filter jailbreak apps and tweaks based on their requirement and budget constraints.
The Updates tab shows you the latest available updates for your favourite tweaks and apps, while you can also uninstall unwanted or unused apps from this tab.
Unique profile and search sections
The Featured page or tab also includes a profile icon and a search icon wherein the search icon enables a quick search option for specific tweak or package, while profile icon lists your name, avatar, number of items or packages installed as well as the number of items in your wishlist.
Finally, you could choose your method of payment by using the Your Wallet button and avail technical support from the iMod team in case you face any issues installing a particular package.
Unified repository
The biggest advantage of iMods over Cydia comes in the form of a single repository for the entire app store.
This will help the iMod team in monitoring and verifying the content submitted to their store in a relatively easier way, as well as to prevent pirated apps or tweaks from making their way into the app store.
Built-in app compatibility check
Another addition to iMod store is the compatibility check that is done in the background to prevent users from downloading incompatible apps by mistake.
The background check ensures that the store displays only those tweaks that are compatible with your iOS device.
For instance, iOS 7 users will be masked from seeing the iOS 8 app updates or tweaks and vice-versa.
Anemone - New theming tool
A new theming tool called Anemone makes its way into the iMod store and replaces the existing Winterboard app. The themes will now be presented to the user in groups instead of individual segments which is the case with Winterboard.
Users can check out the complete video walkthrough of iMod jailbreak store (below), ahead of its public launch in the second week of January 2015.
