Karl Lagerfeld Displays Marie Antoinette-Inspired Chanel Cruise Collection [PHOTOS]
Chanel's 2012-2013 Cruise collection show by German mastermind, Karl Lagerfeld was all about luxury, elitism and high-end fashion.
Held at the Chateau de Versailles (Versailles Palace), outside Paris on 14 May, 2012, the event featured a number of celebrities and fashionistas including Tilda Swinton, Alice Dellal and Vanessa Paradis.
The collection featured exclusive Marie Antoinette-inspired designs comprising denim pedal pushers, tweed palazzo pants and dresses with exaggerated hip bustles, accessorised with chokers.
The Wall Street Journal reported that in a wink to France's executed queen, many of the models wore tiny interlocking c's-Chanel's logo-under the eye as a beauty mark. Then the guests decked out in Chanel's iconic tweeds, pearls and mattelas bags gathered under a transparent tent for hors d'oeuvres such as crab tarts, foie gras slivers and chocolate macarons washed down with Perrier-Jouet champagne.
The collection included scoop-necked peasant sun dresses, biker-tight black leather trouser/jacket ensemble and ultra modern swimwear designs.
According to the Telegraph, accessories included wigs - but ultra short candy-coloured bobs, not powdered grandiose numbers - double C beauty spots applied to the cheek, spray-painted floppy sun-hats and white-soled brothel-creeper trainers. Three men joined the female models, one in a raffishly-revered jacket and breeches double denim outfit, another carrying a black-leather padded Chanel watering can.
Creative director of Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld, is known for luxurious and opulent creations. Lagerfeld is often regarded as the master of reinvention as he has reportedly altered and transformed his creations through the years.
The Cruise or resort collection was originally conceived to target wealthy women who travelled on cruise ships in winter.
According to the Associated Press, nowadays, they are used as a lucrative means of re-stimulating fashions in the mid-season lull, in an industry that's increasingly buoyant and bucking the global financial downturn.
For the Chanel show, model Cara Delavigne opened the event wearing a pale blue denim dress with a crisp A-line skirt.
