London 2012 Olympics Day Five Preview: Wiggins, Lizzie Armitstead and Team GB Rowers Lead Medal Charge

IBTimes UK looks ahead to a day which will see Britain's recent cycling heroes Bradley Wiggins and Lizzie Armitstead return to action, with key clashes in everything from archery to boxing.

Here are the highlights for 1 August:

Archery - British hopes for the event will rest on the heads of Larry Godfrey, Alan Wills and Simon Terry, from the men's individual section and entirely on Amy Oliver for the women's section, after Naomi Folkard and Alison Williamson were eliminated on Day Four.

Wills will play Australian Taylor Worth at 3 pm BST, while Terry will face Japan's Yu Ishizu at 4.18 pm BST, in Round of 32 matches. Godfrey, meanwhile, will face Malaysia's Mohamad Khairul Anuar for a spot in the quarter final, on 3 August. In the women's section, Oliver will face top seed Deepika Kumari of India, at 10.57 am BST.

Basketball - The hosts' women's basketball team will tip-off their preliminary group stage game against Group B co-leaders Russia at 4.45 pm BST and will be hoping for a vastly improved performance; the women have lost both their games so far.

Boxing - Team GB's Luke Campbell will fight Italy's Vittorio Jahyn Parrinello at 8.30 pm BST, in a Round of 16 bout in the men's bantamweight (56kg) class. The winner will face either Ibrahim Balla of Australia or Detelin Dalakliev of Bulgaria in the quarter final. Anthony Joshua will also be in action for the hosts, in the men's super heavyweight (91kg) event. Joshua will have a tough fight on his hands, for he will have to match Cuba's Erislandy Cotilla Savon. Should he win that bout, he will face either Johan Linde of Australia or Zhilei Zhang of China in the quarter final.

Cycling - Cycling returns to the Olympics centre-stage after two gruelling but exciting road races for the men and women. While it was unfortunate that none of Team Sky's members were able to repeat their 2012 Tour de France win or form, the first ever Britain to win that prestigious event - Bradley Wiggins - and his team mate Christopher Froome will want to set some records straight in the men's time trial. The gold medal winner of the road race, Kazakhstan's Alexandr Vinokurov will also be in action. The men's time trial is set to start at Hampton Court Palace at 2.15 pm BST.

The day's action, however, will start with the women's time trial, scheduled also at Hampton Court Palace but at 12.30 pm BST. Britain will look to get squarely behind road race silver medallist Lizzie Armitstead and her team mate Emma Pooley, while Marianne Vos (winner of the road race) will also be racing.

Hockey - The Great Britain men's hockey team will take to the turf at 4 pm BST at the Riverbank Arena against the South Africans and they will look to continue their strong start to the competition; they beat Argeninta 4-1 in their opening game.

Fencing - Louise Bond-Williams of Team GB will face Greece's Vassiliki Vougiouka at 2.10 pm BST in a Round of 32 match in the women's sabre event. Meanwhile, at the same time, another British fencer in the category, Sophie Williams, will take on Italian Irene Vecchi.

Gymnastics - The men's individual all-around final will start at 4.30 pm BST at the North Greenwich Arena and Kristian Thomas and Daniel Purvis, whose heroics lead Team GB to their first Olympic medal in the men's gymnastics events in 88 years, will lead the hosts' charge for a second gymnastics medal.

Rowing - The semi finals of the men's single sculls competition will start from Eton Dorney, with Team GB's Alan Campbell looking to recreate the magic from his quarter final performance. There will also be semi final action from the men's lightweight double sculls, with Mark Hunter and Zac Purchase in action. Meanwhile, there will be medal action from the women's pair event, with Team GB's Heather Stanning and Helen Glover racing for gold. Team GB is also in contention for gold in the women's quadruple sculls event, set to start at 10.20 am BST and the men's eight final, set to start at 9.50 am BST.

Tennis - The top seeds and big names will be back in action on the grass courts of Wimbledon, as the tennis events at the London 2012 Olympics look to make up ground lost to inclement weather.
