Manchester United to Hand No 7 Shirt to Juventus Star Midfielder Arturo Vidal
Manchester United are closing in on completing a deal with Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal, according to the Chilean newspaper La Tercera.
The 27-year-old has long been linked with a move to Old Trafford as their new manager Louis van Gaal strives to bolster the Red Devils' midfield for the new season. However, with no deal agreed, the Chilean international has returned to Turin and is training with his club teammates.
Vidal's agent Fernando Felicevich has reportedly already held talks with Juventus sporting director Giuseppe Marotta and has placed United's £47.5m bid on the table in an attempt to break the impasse. The player is set to agree a deal with the Old Trafford club, which could see him earn £200,000-a-week with the Premier League giants.
United are not happy with the ongoing negotiations and Van Gaal has urged the Red Devils' vice-chairman Ed Woodward to set up the process. The Dutchman has already informed Woodward that he is not happy with the existing crop of midfielders available and is looking to bring in reinforcements.
Marouane Fellaini could be on his way out of Old Trafford in the summer transfer window after spending one season at United. Serie A outfit Napoli have confirmed their interest in signing the former Everton midfielder.
Fellaini's future at the club is uncertain and Michael Carrick is out with an injury till September. Van Gaal is left with Darren Fletcher and Tom Cleverley as the recognised midfielders in the squad, along with summer signing Ander Herrera.
A move for Vidal is likely to help Van Gaal solve his midfield problems. However, United need to move quickly in signing the former Bayer Leverkusen man as the same report claims Ligue 1 winners Paris Saint-Germain have now joined the race to sign the midfielder.
Despite interest from PSG, United are confident that they can seal a move for Vidal. The Chilean midfield star will be handed the famous No 7 shirt at Old Trafford, according to certain sources.
