Full time: Manchester United 4-0 Fenerbahce

Perhaps the most routine victory of Jose Mourinho's tenure in charge. Two first-half penalties, coupled with Paul Pogba's strike put United on course at half time, before Jesse Lingard complete the rout with a second half fourth. The home fans even had a Robin van Persie goal to enjoy, which was met by applause from all corners of Old Trafford.

It was the ideal way to blow away the cobwebs after the draw at Liverpool and warm-up for Mourinho's return to Chelsea this weekend. Speaking of which, we'll be back with full coverage of all the weekend's Premier League football including the clash at Stamford Bridge. Until then however, goodbye.

A touching moment as Van Persie pays tribute to the crowd who applaud his late consolation.

Mata denied a fifth for a second time as he twists and turns in the box, but his effort is blocked.

Quite a moment at Old Trafford as Robin van Persie nets a consolation for Fenerbahce with a tidy finish, a goal which is met with raptures of applause from all corners of the ground. A moment to restore your faith in football, following Van Persie's three-year spell at United. Sloppy from the hosts, but their supporters seem unperturbed.

Juan Mata should really make it five as he goes through on goal but he is denied by Demirel. I make that the first time the Fenerbahce goalkeeper has got a hand on anything tonight, and about time too.

Tim Fosu-Mensah becomes the latest United change, coming on for the two-goal Paul Pogba. Just over 15 minutes remaining at Old Trafford.

United treating the remainder of this game a little bit like a training game and they're picking off Fenerbahce at will. The Turks are long gone here and will already be thinking about trying to repay the favour in a fortnight's time.

Chance for Mourinho to rest a few players with Chelsea to come on Sunday. Jesse Lingard, after a goal and an assist, is the first to earn one as Memphis Depay comes on for a rare appearance.

Robin van Persie has been a mere spectator tonight, but finally he is into the action after an hour. He collects the ball from Emenike's lay-off and curls goalwards from 30 yards but it is wide of De Gea's riht-hand post.

Half a chance for Fenerbahce to pull back what would only be a consolation goal at this stage, as Volkan Sen gets in behind, but his cross can't find Van Persie or Emenike, who was lurking 12 yards out in loads of room.

United home and dry but their pressing game has not relented and they make it four less than three minutes after the restart. Pogba and Rooney combine to tee up Lingard, who rifles into the bottom corner from 25 yards. A comfortable win turning into a rout, and Mourinho can look ahead to Chelsea on Sunday.

Marcos Rojo on for Manchester United, as Chris Smalling - who played against Liverpool on Monday - is replaced. A change for Fenerbahce too as former West Ham striker Emmanuel Emenike replaces defender Simon Kjaer. Second half under way at Old Trafford.

Half time: Manchester United 3-0 Fenerbahce

From one glance at the scoreline you'd think is has been plain sailing for the home side, but it has been nothing of the sort in this opening 45 minutes. United have lacked ideas throughout but two defence-splitting passes from Michael Carrick and Juan Mata - which have led to penalties from Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial - and a fine strike from the world's most expensive player ensures Jose Mourinho's men are home and dry.

Far from his very best since joining from Juventus, but a hint of what Paul Pogba can do on the stroke of half-time. Rooney's cross is taken in brilliantly by Jesse Lingard, whose perfectly-weighted lay-off finds Pogba on the run who sweeps the ball high into the top corner to put United out of sight.

United cut apart straight away and they have David de Gea to thank for keeping the size of their lead intact. Souza cuts inside Chris Smalling and only the legs of the Spain international keeps it at 2-0. Important intervention.

Goal: Manchester United 2-0 Fenerbahce (Anthony Martial)

Amazing. United given the chance to double their lead less than a minute later as Mata turns provider to find Martial, who is taken out by Şener Özbayraklı. Referee Bastien has no hesitation but to point to the spot, but this time it is Martial, not Pogba or Wayne Rooney, who steps up and steers United 2-0 to the good.

Penalty to Manchester United

A gift from Fenerbahce helps a lacklustre United take the lead. Michael Carrick picks out Juan Mata with a fine 40-yard pass. The Spaniard is the wrong side of Simon Kjaer and is brought down. Paul Pogba, rather than Wayne Rooney, steps up and sends goalkeeper Volkan Demirel the wrong way.

Home crowd starting to get agitated at Old Trafford as the home side continue to fail to make a worthwhile impression. Pogba tries to inspire some urgency, but his cross is easily headed clear by Skrtel.

Plenty of fight from Rooney so far, but not much quality.

Best chance for either team comes after 25 minutes and it's for the home side. Mata has time to whip a cross in from the left and Martial comes in around the back post but can't get solid contact on the ball and flicks wide from six yards.

Pictorial evidence of Sam Allardyce's presence at Old Trafford tonight. A guest of Sir Alex Ferguson, apparently.

Rooney has been horribly quiet in the opening quarter of this game and he fails to reign the ball in from Mata's class, treading on it before it rolls behind. Not a brilliant start from the home team this.

Mourinho will not have been overly impressed with the United display so far.

Former England coach Sam Allardyce in the directors box at Old Trafford this evening. He's done well to sneak into the directors box, up until this point.

Some nice pass-and-move football from United but it comes to an abrupt end when Mata fails to get his shot away on the edge of the penalty area. Not much zip and dynamism from the hosts, much in keeping with Mourinho's view on this competition.

Mehmet Topal is another to watch in the Fenerbahce side, bar the obvious candidates, but he overhits a pass as an attack from the visitors breaks down. Low key opening 12 minutes at Old Trafford.

Around 3,000 have made the trip from Turkey for this one and the travelling support will have been impressed by what they have seen thus far, having moved the ball calmly in possession and kept their illustrious hosts largely at bay.

Wayne Rooney into a central attacking role straight from kick-off. Big chance for the skipper to make an impression tonight.

Uefa ticking their anti-racism box with a photo of both teams united on the halfway line. An irrelevant act which succeeds in achieving absolutely nothing. Underway at Old Trafford.

Players on their way at Old Trafford where Manchester United host Fenerbache. Rooney vs Van Persie, Martial vs Skrtel and Pogba vs Topal among the head-to-heads to look forward to tonight.

"Have you seen the line-up and the bench?" That was the response from Dick Advocaat when asked if he thought Manchester United were taking things easy with their team selection tonight. The Dutchman will be under no illusions over the challenge facing his side tonight, even if there have been seven changes from the Liverpool draw.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan misses out again for Manchester United tonight. Here is Jose Mourinho on why: "One thing is fit and not injured, another thing is match fitness, match intensity and ready to play this game," Mourinho told BT Sport. "I play with Lingard and Martial and I have Rashford and Memphis on the bench, I cannot play with everyone at the same time. Mikhi has not played for a long time."

RVP given a heroes reception.

Fenerbahce have twice played at Old Trafford, with hugely differing results. Their last visit saw a Wayne Rooney debut hat-trick defeat them 6-2. That result came 18 years after they claimed a famous win as Elvir Bolic's ended United's unbeaten home record in Europe.

Tonight sees the latest chapter in the Wayne Rooney saga, as he makes a return to the first team after three games of being forced to come off the bench. Even Gareth Southgate demoted the England captain and there remains little doubt he has it all to do to regain his place for both club and country. Tonight looks as though he will play in a central attacking role, with Lingard and Martial either side, but can he provide the thrust his performances have been lacking?

Remember, Manchester United are not the only Premier League side in action tonight, with Southampton taking on Inter Milan at the San Siro. Claude Puel's team are giving it a might good go too with an hour gone in Italy. Follow the remaining 30 minutes here.

The stand-out names in that Fenerbahce team comes at the heart of the defence where Simon Kjaer partners Martin Skrtel, Mehmet Topal is selected in midfield while the attack is led by former United forward Robin van Persie. Certainly enough quality there to punish a half-baked United display.

And now for the Fenerbahce team....

Seven changes for United from the draw with Liverpool. David de Gea, Eric Bailly, Chris Smalling and Paul Pogba are the survivors from Anfield.

Captain Wayne Rooney is recalled, Anthony Martial returns from injury and Zlatan Ibrahimovic is on the bench.

Teams in ahead of schedule......

Fenerbahce might be no strangers to the lights of Old Trafford, but their preparations for their return to Manchester have been somewhat disrupted. The plane carrying the players was forced into an emergency landing in Budapest yesterday after a pigeon cracked the windscreen. The team arrived on English shores several hours late and were forced to cancel a training session scheduled for Wednesday [19 October]. Not ideal for Dick Advocaat's side, but his experience alone should ensure they're ready come kick-off.

Meanwhile, United's players have arrived ahead of kick-off. Zlatan Ibrahimovic among them.

Before we start building up to tonight's game at Old Trafford, a mention that if you'd like to keep up with Southampton's trip to the San Siro to face Inter Milan then you can do via our live blog. Game approaching half time in Italy.

Jose Mourinho can hardly have been endeared by the prospect of a second game in four days, sandwiched between the dreary draw at Liverpool and first return to former club Chelsea, and even less so by the fixture coming in the Europa League - a competition he loathes with unique relish.

The reality is Manchester United's European campaign thus far has reflected the outlook of their manager; laboured, sluggish and indifferent in a competition that is a burden rather than any sort of realistic route into the Champions League. Three points have come from their two games and if they have any ambitions of reaching the knock-out phase then tonight's game is a must-win.

Dick Advocaat-managed Turkish club Fenerbahce represent the familiar opponents, and Robin van Persie the friendly among the visitors following his successful three-year spell at Old Trafford. All the team news and build up ahead of the kick-off at 8:05pm on the way.
