One Direction split: Boy band to perform at the Super Bowl 2016 halftime show before taking hiatus?
They are set to take a lengthy break next year and it looks as though One Direction will be going out with a bang. The boy band are reportedly due to perform at the Super Bowl 2016 alongside Bruno Mars as their final performance before embarking on a hiatus.
NFL organisers are said to be keen to sign up 1D members Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne and Niall Horan before they go their separate ways in February 2016. A source told the Daily Star On Sunday: "NFL bosses want a superstar line-up and One Direction are very much in the mix. They want a pop and rock mash-up and it is thought that Coldplay and Bruno Mars are in talks too.
"NFL bigwigs want a one-off show that will be remembered and garner the greatest audience figures ever. Obviously the 12-minute halftime show will be worth millions in revenue, sales and downloads too. With the band finishing it would be the ultimate way for the group to say farewell to their fans."
It is no surprise that the NFL are keen to enlist 29-year-old Mars again, as the Uptown Funk hitmaker attracted healthy viewing figures of 115.3m when he headlined in 2014, becoming the most-watched Super Bowl performance of all time. Following Katy Perry's headline set in February 2015, a variety of singers have been rumoured to headline the sport event's 50th anniversary in 2016, including Britney Spears.

One Direction are currently in the midst of their On The Road Again world tour, scheduled to resume in London on 24 September with six shows at the O2 Arena. In addition to appearing at the Super Bowl, it is possible the Night Changes singers could make their last public appearance at the Brit Awards in London in February.
Shutting down speculation that they are splitting for good, Horan, 22, told worried fans on Twitter: "OK so lots of rumours going round. We are not splitting up, but we will be taking a well-earned break at some point next year. Don't worry though, we still have lots we want to achieve! Can't wait for you to hear all the new music we have for you and to perform some new songs as the tour continues! Love you all."
Before their hiatus, 1D will be releasing their yet-to-be-titled fifth studio album, which their producer said would be "sexually charged".
