The 17-time Grand Slam winner now has 68 career wins at the All England Club and is aiming to avoid an upset similar to last year, where he failed to reach the third round.
Meanwhile, Muller set up his second round clash against the Swiss maestro after registering a hard-fought victory over the 46th ranked Julien Benneteau. The 31-year-old swiftly secured the first set, 6-4, but his French opponent dragged the subsequent sets into the tiebreaker for deciding the outcome.
The Luxembourgian sealed the second and third set, 7-6(6), 7-6(5), in what was his fourth victory in the last five meetings against Benneteau.
Federer, who already stated that he is confident of winning the title for the eighth time, is the favourite to progress into the next round. Barring an upset, the world no 4 will be up against the winner between Marcel Granollers and Santiago Giraldo in the third round on Saturday.
