Overview
No 5 seed Gael Monfils takes on surprise package Martin Klizan in the final of the Rotterdam Open at the Ahoy Arena. Ranked 43, Klizan saved five match points in his quarter-final win and in the semi-final he pulled back three against Nicolas Mahut in a match lasting 2 hours and 45 minutes, eventually winning 6-7 (3), 7-6 (7), 6-2.
The 26-year-old, who will be appearing in the fourth final of his career, is yet to win an ATP 500 title. His form is such that he is capable of upsetting Monfils to lift his first title of 2016.
Monfils came into the Rotterdam Open as the favourite and has lived up to the billing so far, cruising past Philipp Schreiber 6-3, 6-2 in the semi-final. The fifth seed, who was playing his first semi-final of 2016, won his 12th game against the German, taking his record to 12-2 in 14 meetings.
Monfils, like his opponent, has never won an ATP 500 title, with all his titles coming at the ATP 250 level. If the 29-year-old wins, it will be the sixth title of his career and the first of the calendar year.
