Overview
Defending champion Wawrinka will start the defence of his title when he takes on Czech Republic's Lukas Rosol in the first round on 23 May (Monday). Wawrinka, who is seeded third after the withdrawal of Roger Federer, has had a packed schedule in recent times and comes into this game after winning the Geneva Open, which in fact was his third ATP title of the season.
The Swiss player, though, has not had a good time of late on European clay, losing in the fourth round of the Indian Wells, the second round of the Miami Masters and in the quarter-final of the recently concluded Rome Masters. The world number four comes into this game as the favourite and will need to hit form immediately in what will be a highly competitive tournament.
Best known for beating Rafael Nadal at the 2012 Wimbledon, Rosol has reached the quarter-final of the French Open twice in the past and will not be an easy opponent to face. The Czech International, who has two ATP titles to his name, is not expected to win against Wawrinka. In fact, this will be the third time that the duo face each other this season with the world number four winning all those encounters.
