Overview
Defending French Open champion Stan Wawrinka narrowly avoided a first round upset, as he gears up to face Daniel Taro on 25 May. Wawrinka suffered a scare against Czech Republic's Lukas Rosol eventually fighting back to win 4-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
For long periods of the game it was the Czech who looked the better of the two, only for the world number four to show just why he is rated so highly. A loss for Wawrinka would mean he would have become the first-ever male defending champion to get knocked out in the round of 128.
That he survived showed his mental fortitude and while his opponent Taro Daniel is talented, he will be expected to easily win on Wednesday.
Having hit a career-high ranking of 85 this season, it can be safe to say that Taro Daniel looks promising. He is, however, yet to beat a player in the top-20 despite playing in four ATP Tournaments this year. He will need to play out of his skin if he has to challenge Wawrinka and beat him, which seems unlikely.
