Twitter goes on the attack after Paris Hilton claims she invented the selfie
Hotel heiress claims she and Britney Spears took first selfie in 2006.

Twitter users have mocked socialite Paris Hilton for claiming she and Britney Spears invented the selfie in 2006.
Hilton tweeted on Sunday evening: "11 years ago today, Me & Britney invented the selfie!" Her claim subsequently sparked a debate on who actually took the first selfie.
Moreover, people's suggestions were hardly along the same vein as Hilton or Spears. Robert Cornelius, an American photography and lamp entrepreneur, is believed to have taken the first selfie in October 1839.
Since Hilton shared the photo, a number of people have posted their tongue-in-cheek suggestions as to who the real selfie pioneer was:
Sorry, @BillNyeSaves did it way before you. It was 1999 pic.twitter.com/yEHZN5BVvd

One user even claimed that Mr Bean was the first recorded selfie:

Some users asserted that Hilton was a liar:
Paris Hilton claims she invented the selfie. She also claims to have been the first person to climb Mt Everest #ThingsParisClaims pic.twitter.com/0bbvr2qmCr

Not all reactions were negative however with one user calling her tweet "iconic".
Ultimately, if Twitter responses were a means of determining facts, it seems conclusive Hilton had absolutely no role in inventing the selfie. The debate rages on.
