Wayward Pines finale: Twist ending may set up season 2; Ethan and Kate fight Abbies to save town in Cycle
Wayward Pines' season finale will find Ethan and the rest of the town fighting the Abbies as the future of humanity is in jeopardy.
Episode 10 is titled Cycle, which will air on 23 July at 9pm EST on Fox.
The official synopsis reads as follows:
After Pilcher decides to turn off the electricity in Wayward Pines - with deadly repercussions - Ethan and Kate take the initiative to make sure everyone is out of harm's way. Meanwhile, Nurse Pam confronts Pilcher on his decision and tries to convince him to reconsider, Ethan and Kate plan for an attack and the first generation tries to protect the future of Wayward Pines by taking matters into their own hands in the all-new "Cycle" season finale episode.
In the pre-finale episode, things finally come to a head between Dr Pilcher (Toby Jones) and Ethan, as the sheriff assembles the entire town under the pretence that he is going to reckon Kate. However, instead of killing Kate, Ethan uses that opportunity to blow the whistle on Pilcher and reveal the town's secret to everyone. But the twist at the end of the tale is that Dr Pilcher turns off all the lights, shuts down the town's grid, and lets the Abbies into the fence.
Going by the tempo and plot, the show is heading towards a predictable ending just as in the Blake Crouch books.
In the book, the Abbies kill many of the townspeople in the final showdown, but Ethan and around 250 others manage to force them back outside and get the fence working again. The survivors also exile Pilcher outside of the gate, which is as good as killing him.
But here's the twist: In the year 4028, they realise that their food supply is running short, and so go back into a cryogenic sleep and wake up 70,000 years later.
Here's the final line in the book: "Seventy thousand years later, Ethan Burke's eyes slammed open."
This ending could possibly set up season 2, as we can see Ethan and his group of survivors trying to start a new life in the future. The group's new challenges and if their future world is habitable could bring up a lot of possible plotlines.
Deadline reported that Fox is interested in a second season of the mystery series, but the season will be without its cast members Matt Dillon, Carla Gugino and Melissa Leo. So as of now, the idea is to have a second season follow an entirely different set of characters, but have it set in the same futuristic world.
In a new promo for the finale episode, we see Ethan and Kate taking charge to protect the town, even as the Abbies threaten to wipe out humanity's last few survivors.
Ethan tells a scared looking Ben, "We are going to get through this," which implies that he will save everyone from the Abbies.
In the next scene, we see Ethan loading up guns and asking Kate if she's ready. As the doors open we see thousands of Abbies running amok, killing and eating people. The promo shows a lot of violence, nurse Pam begging her brother Pilcher to bring the gates down and a lot of dead Abbies.
"You have to put an end to this" an injured Kate tells Ethan, as we see him break open a door and point his gun at someone.
Showrunner Chad Hodge warns that the theme of the season 1 finale will be "You get what you pay for."
"David Pilcher saved the last of humanity and brought them 2,000 years into the future," Hodge explained to Entertainment Weekly. "He gave his life for this. It was a massively costly endeavor. When you rise to those highest of heights there is often nowhere to go but down."
