Where is Justin Bieber? This was the question on everyone's mind when Selena Gomez hit the American Music Awards red carpet on Sunday, 19 November. The duo has been painting the town red these last two weeks, sparking rumours that they have rekindled their romance. And many Selena fans expected them to make their relationship official by walking the AMA red carpet as a couple.

However, Selena appeared solo at the awards show in a glam black leather jacket-inspired mini dress, with the 25-year-old also debuting her blonde hair. However, her rumoured boyfriend was MIA at the event despite being nominated in four categories.

The Heart Wants What it Wants singer also shared an image of her makeover on Instagram, which was reportedly "liked" and then swiftly unliked by the Sorry singer. But hawk-eyed fans did not miss the moment, with many taking screenshots of the same to prove that the singer is definitely a fan of Gomez's new look.

After her emotional acceptance speech in 2016, Selena returned to the AMAs, which took place at Los Angeles' Microsoft Theater on Sunday. And this time too, her electrifying performance evoked an emotional response from the audience, with many hailing her for beating the odds since this was the songstress' first televised performance post her kidney transplant.

But where was Bieber?

The 23-year-old What Do You Mean singer, on the other hand, gave a miss to the award show despite being spotted in the city of Los Angeles – the city hosting the event. On Sunday, he shared three back-to-back photos on Instagram, pictured along with Jaden Smith as they attended the Fall Out Boy concert.

The singer has missed all the major award shows since 2016, largely due to his Purpose tour, which he cancelled in August this year as he wanted his "mind, heart and soul to be sustainable" along with his career.

Gomez and the Baby singer had been on an on-again, off-again relationship for years before finally calling it quits in 2016. Shortly after that, Selena started dating The Weeknd, with the duo pictured on several romantic getaways. However, the Fetish singer went off the radar in the summer earlier this year, only to reveal that she had suffered a near-death health crisis after her kidneys had given up due to Lupus.

Her life was dramatically saved thanks to her friend Francia Raisa, who donated one of her kidneys. Gomez announced her painful recovery in an emotional Instagram post and soon after that, there were changes in her dating life as well.

Weeks after the transplant announcement, she was spotted with Bieber. What was initially thought to be a casual meeting between the former lovers, later turned out to be a serious emotional attachment, with reports later confirming that she had split with The Weeknd.

Though they are yet to make their relationship official, their constant public outings – be it their fun cycle rides or the spiritual bonding over Sunday church visits or the duo's public kiss during Bieber's hockey game – has prompted fans to believe that they are together again.
