WWE: Steve Austin talks about the stunt that almost killed him
'I'm in a room, inside a truck, breathing methanol/alcohol fumes - I could barely breathe,' he said.
"Stone Cold" Steve Austin has performed some outrageous stunts in his pro-wrestling career but one stunt almost killed him.
The beer guzzling Texan revealed the incident happened during a skit that required him to drive a monster truck and destroy The Rock's Lincoln Town Car on an episode of Monday Night Raw during the Attitude Era.
As Austin had never driven such a truck he had a quick crash course at the parking lot and learnt to handle the truck in a couple of minutes.
"It was a bad ass dodge with an alcohol/methanol motor and about 1800 horsepower. Anyway, I learn to drive the monster truck after about 15-20 minutes in the parking lot," Austin said on his podcast.
"The thing about me I can drive anything in about fifteen minutes. Don't give a s**t what it is, I can drive it."
After Austin felt comfortable with the truck he went about crushing the car on live TV, but what followed almost turned deadly. He was in the holding room while still inside the truck with the 1800 horsepower motor of the truck "churning out exhaust fumes".
"So I'm in this room and they shut the door behind me. It was about a three minutes commercial break, so the whole time the people back home are watching commercials, I'm in a room, inside a truck, breathing methanol/alcohol fumes — I could barely breathe."
"I was just begging for the show to come back on air so I could charge out in the audience and get a breath of fresh air," he said. "I'm breathing all those exhaust fumes, m*******er, I was going to crash that gate doing 98 (157km/h) and go and take my own cue and haul a** into the arena, if they hadn't of cued me when they did- I was about to die."
Luckily, Austin escaped the situation unhurt and went on to perform more crazy stunts in his career.
