Brendan Rodgers: Liverpool Will Sign Starters in the Summer
Brendan Rodgers claims Liverpool are looking to bring in players in the summer who will get directly into the first team next season.
The Northern Irishman admitted the Reds are planning to add six new faces to the squad in the coming transfer window. From the last summer additions, only Simon Mignolet has been a regular inclusion in Liverpool's starting lineup.
The Spanish duo of Iago Aspas and Luis Alberto, loan signings Victor Moses and Aly Cissokho, along with Tiago Ilori have been hardly used by the former Swansea boss this season.
Rodgers says the additions done last summer were to give cover to Liverpool's first team players. He is looking to bring in quality players to walk into the first team as the Anfield club will be back in the Champions League next season.
"The players we brought in last summer were young players and players to cover. This season we need to bring in starters," Rodgers told the Telegraph.
"One of the things watching the Manchester City game the other night is they are bringing on Jovetic who scores the goal (£23-24m), Fernandinho (£29m) and Negredo (£20m)."
"That level of player to bring into the game is massive for you and I think this year the reality is we've been unable to do that. We have started games amazingly well. We have been up in a lot of games before the hour mark and not been able to manage the games through."
"There are going to be games next season in all the competitions, Premier League, Champions League whatever, when we're going to need to be able to change the game."
"I have tried to do that this year with systems and different tweaks but next year it will be with personnel and that will be important for us," Liverpool manager concluded.
The Merseyside club are linked with a move in signing Southampton star Adam Lallana and Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole. In addition to this, Liverpool and Manchester United are set for a summer battle in signing Barcelona midfielder Alex Song.
