DWP Winter Fuel Payment Could Be Worth £775 — Why Millions Are Being Told to Check Now
Officials are urging people to check eligibility before schemes close and to remain alert to scams targeting winter support payments

Millions of households across the United Kingdom are being urged to check their eligibility for winter support payments, amid reports that some families could receive up to £775 in combined assistance before the end of March.
The figure reflects the cumulative value of several Department for Work and Pensions-backed schemes operating alongside local authority support, not a single payment. With deadlines approaching for several programmes, officials say eligible households should review what help they may still be entitled to receive.
While many payments are made automatically, eligibility depends on age, benefit status and location. As a result, some households may need to take action to ensure they receive the correct support before schemes close.
How The £775 Figure Is Calculated
The £775 total is reached by adding together support from up to four separate winter schemes, each with its own eligibility criteria.
The largest contribution can come from the Household Support Fund, which is administered by local councils using central government funding. Councils distribute grants to help residents with essentials such as food, heating and energy bills. Support varies by area, with some councils offering grants of up to £600, while others provide smaller payments or vouchers.
Pensioners may also receive the Winter Fuel Payment, worth between £100 and £300 per household depending on age and circumstances. For winter 2025/26, eligibility is generally based on being born on or before September 1959 and living in the UK during the qualifying week in September. Payments are usually made automatically between November and December, though claims can be submitted up to 31 March.
Additional support may come from the Warm Home Discount Scheme, which provides a £150 credit applied directly to electricity bills for eligible low-income households in England and Wales, and Cold Weather Payments of £25, which are triggered automatically during periods of prolonged freezing temperatures.
What The Winter Fuel Payment Is
The Winter Fuel Payment is an annual, tax-free benefit intended to help older households with winter energy costs. It is not means-tested and does not affect entitlement to other benefits.
Most eligible pensioners receive the payment automatically into their bank account. Those who believe they qualify but have not received a payment can contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre or check guidance on GOV.UK.
In Scotland, the Winter Fuel Payment has been replaced by a new benefit called the Pension Age Winter Heating Payment. While both schemes support people of State Pension age with heating costs, the Scottish payment has different eligibility rules and payment amounts compared to the Winter Fuel Payment elsewhere in the UK.
Who Should Check Their Eligibility
Officials advise households to review their eligibility if they receive benefits such as Pension Credit, Universal Credit, Income Support or Housing Benefit, as these can unlock access to several winter schemes.
People who have recently reached state pension age, moved home, changed who they live with or experienced changes to their benefit status are also encouraged to check their circumstances. Applications for the Household Support Fund often need to be made directly to local councils, and rules and deadlines vary by area.

Scam Warnings Issued
The government has warned of an increase in scams linked to winter support payments. Fraudsters may contact people claiming to be from the DWP or other authorities and request personal or bank details.
Officials say legitimate payments are never issued by asking for information via text, email or phone. Suspicious messages can be forwarded to 7726, and suspected scams should be reported to Action Fraud.
With several schemes due to close by the end of March, advisers say checking eligibility now could make a meaningful difference to household finances before winter ends.
