Tragedy in Helsinki: Finnish MP Eemeli Peltonen, 30, Found Dead Inside Parliament Weeks After Revealing Health Struggles

Finland is in mourning following the demise of Eemeli Peltonen, a 30-year-old Social Democratic Party (SDP) MP, who was found dead inside the Parliament building in Helsinki on Tuesday morning.
Police confirmed his passing at around 11:06 am local time, with authorities treating the case as an apparent suicide and ruling out foul play.
A Nation in Shock
The shocking news prompted Prime Minister Petteri Orpo to suspend political activity for the day and lead a minute's silence.
'Some time ago, we received truly shocking news from Parliament, our shared workplace. One of our colleagues has died in the parliamentary premises. This is very sad news,' Orpo told reporters.
Parliament Speaker Jussi Halla-aho described Peltonen as 'a well-liked and respected colleague across party lines' in a statement posted on social media.
The Finnish flag was lowered to half-mast outside Parliament, and tributes poured in from across the political spectrum.
Tytti Tuppurainen, chair of the SDP parliamentary group, said: 'He was a much-loved member of our community and will be deeply missed. A young life has ended far too soon.'
Body Found Inside Parliament
Emergency services were called to the Eduskuntatalo, Finland's Parliament House, at approximately 11:06 am local time. Police confirmed Peltonen's death shortly afterwards and stated that the case is being investigated as a death inquiry, with no indication of criminal activity.
Parliament was in summer recess at the time, with MPs scheduled to return on 2 September.
Health Struggles Shared Publicly

Peltonen had been absent from parliamentary duties in recent weeks due to health issues. In June, he posted on social media that he was undergoing treatment for a kidney condition and had contracted a bacterial infection during hospital care.
'In May, I got good care at Helsinki University Hospital for a kidney problem, which was diagnosed as minimal change disease. After this, I have time to stay home for a few weeks and get ready to get back to normal life,' he wrote.
He was diagnosed with minimal change disease, a rare kidney disorder, and had begun a course of intravenous antibiotics. His openness about his health struggles had drawn public sympathy and support.
From Early Success to an Unexpected Farewell
Born in Järvenpää, Peltonen entered politics as a teenager, being first elected to the city council at the age of 18. He later chaired the city's executive board and was known for his pragmatic leadership and commitment to social justice. He was elected to Parliament in 2023 with 5,747 votes, making him one of the youngest MPs in the chamber.
In Parliament, Peltonen served on the Administration and Legal Affairs Committees and played a key role in negotiations over Finland's controversial border pushback legislation in 2024.
Local officials and colleagues described him as approachable, thoughtful, and deeply committed to public service. 'He always sought constructive solutions and had a good sense of humour,' said Järvenpää city manager Iiris Laukkanen.
A Community in Mourning
Peltonen's death has prompted an outpouring of grief from his hometown and across Finland. Järvenpää will hold a day of mourning, with flags flown at half-mast on Wednesday.
Kerava councillor Samuli Isola, a close friend, said: 'He was always interested in people's lives and wanted to make the world a better place. He had such a promising future ahead.'
Following Peltonen's passing, Anette Karlsson, a politician from Porvoo, will take his seat in Parliament. Karlsson, who won 3,867 votes in the 2023 election, announced she would rejoin the SDP and serve in its parliamentary group.
The loss of such a young and dedicated politician has reignited discussion in Finland about mental health and the pressures faced by those in public service.
Peltonen's openness about his illness and his sudden death serve as a stark reminder of the human struggles behind political life.
As Finland mourns, tributes continue to honour a man remembered not only for his political work but for his humanity, empathy, and potential cut tragically short.
